Biquadratic exchange effect on the magnetic anisotropy in a Heisenberg linear chain antiferromagnet [(CH3)3NH]MnBr 32H2O

Abstract

The anisotropy in the paramagnetic susceptibility of the Heisenberg linear chain antiferromagnet [(CH3)3NH]MnBr32H 2O has been studied between 1.8 K and room temperature. Below 10 K anomalously large anisotropy was observed in the plane including the direction of chains. This large anisotropy could be explained by taking account of the small biquadratic exchange interaction in addition to the bilinear one.
