    Abstract

We have investigated electron extraction mechanisms of a miniature microwave discharge neutralizer by using three-dimensional particle simulations. The simulation model consists of particle-in-cell simulations with Monte Carlo collisions (PIC/MCC) for kinetics of charged particles, a finite-difference time-domain method (FDTD) for the electromagnetic fields of microwaves, and a finite element analysis for magnetrostatic fields of permanent magnets. We found that the E×B drift velocity would be an important parameter for electron extraction, where the E×B drift velocity is caused by the radial magnetic fields and the azimuthal electrostatic fields induced by characteristic potential distributions.
